Many local residents also participate – many of whom have won medals in years past.

How it Began

The Huntsman World Senior Games, as known by many today, started in 1987 known then as the World Senior Games, an international senior sports competition. The games were founded by Daisy and John H. Morgan, Jr. They had a passion for sports and envisioned an international sports event for men and women of all ages above 55. They both had felt the their golden years when combining them with great health and a dedication to being physically fit. For them it became a way of life, not just a recreational hobby. It has since caught fire and has become a large event in southern Utah.

Jon M. Huntsman, Chairman of the Huntsman Corporation, in 1989, became the Games' main sponsor after he acknowledged that the Games promoted and facilitated a great fitness for life, but contributed to the economy of Utah is a wonderful way, especially in the southern Utah Dixie area. As might be expected, the Huntsman family are proud supporters of the Game and continue to personally open the Games with a warm welcome to the athletes, and in lighting the torch in traditional Olympic fashion during the Games' Opening Ceremonies.

Since the beginning of the Games, the competition has welcomed all men and women who met the age requirement. The age was dropped from 55 to age 50 with the purpose to be able to include more athletes, encouraging seniors approaching retirement to get involved in their personal fitness and team sport.

27 Different Events with 2,500 Volunteers

The Games' has a dedicated full-time staff that works all year, along with more than 2,500 helpful volunteers to host 27 different athletic events over two weeks every October. The Huntsman World Senior Games is headquartered in southern Utah and has become a popular and famous event for serious athletes, many of whom train and prepare themselves for this event. Athletes come from Germany to Australia, and Russia to Japan. Many countries have participated in the GamesHuntsman World Senior Games - St. George, Utah. The Games would not be complete without these volunteers. Thousands of adults, youth, and children who donate countless hours to make this two-week event a treasured experience for all. From entertainers to sport directors, each volunteer plays a valuable role in making the Games a huge success people can be proud of.

Health Screenings

More than just the athletic competitions the Games offer, there are also wonderful health screenings for prostate, cancer-breast. Other health threats are also detected such as; high blood pressure, high cholesterol, glaucoma, diabetes, and decreased bone density. Volunteer medical and nursing students assist with the screenings and generous sponsors provide diagnostic equipment and services.

Celebration Time

Whether or not participants win a medal or not, another important aspect of the Games really emphasizes the successes of the athletes. The incorporation of awards ceremonies, concerts, bands, social gatherings, and dances. These events unify the athletes and bring people together socially to share in, and congratulate each other for their achievements.

The Future of the Games

From now into the future as the Games roll on through the years, one thing is for sure - this one-of-a kind celebration that promotes Peace, Friendship, Good Health, will continue its mission. Like they say, “Fun! Don't forget the Fun!”
