Guests staying at one of the southern Utah's most visited attractions, Tuacahn Amphitheater is the most popular place to see a Broadway musical, Tuacahn Amphitheaterplay, or live concert while visiting the St. George area. Tuacahn is built in the heart of southern Utah's red sandstone cliffs that offer a breathtaking red rock backdrop and canyon views as well as smaller indoor theaters. The performing arts complex offers a 2,000-seat open-air amphitheater that faces the red cliffs, a 330-seat indoor theater, and all the necessary accompaniments needed by actors. There is also a smaller outdoor stage with a pavilion area for eating and gathering. All this is housed in an innovative architecture that blends well into the surrounding desert.

Tuacahn is located just 5 minutes to Paradise Village at Zion - a new vacation home community in Santa Clara. It is close to the entrance of Snow Canyon State Park. It is an innovative non-profit corporation which opened in 1995 with the dual purpose of providing a school for the arts and a professional performing facility. The $23 million facility was privately funded and is considered to be state-of-the-art. A night out at Tuacahn is a night not soon forgotten! Broadway in the Desert

The Tuacahn Theater brings "Broadway in the Desert" to southern Utah! Throughout the warm months, this theater company features Utah's finest actors (new and seasoned), in some of Broadway's greatest productions! The intimate, outdoor theater is always enhanced by the brilliant, natural red rock backdrop. A night out at Tuacahn is a night not soon forgotten! Click for this year's production schedule.

Tuacahn and its productions have been called Broadway in the Desert, due largely to the many productions of popular Broadway musicals. In the spring of 1995, the doors of this 23 million dollar facility opened to the roar of the crowds. In its inaugural season, the Tuacahn Amphitheater presented an original musical production called "Utah!" This play would run, in various forms, for the next four seasons. The musical Utah played to over 250,000 people from ever state and twenty-five countries. In 1999, it was decided that the theater should offer its patrons more variety. It was at this time that the "Summer Festival of Theater" was born.

Family Memories to Last a Lifetime at Tuacahn

Few things are more precious than family memories cherished by your children. Our family will never forget some of the shows and plays we have experienced at Tuacahn from row 5 to row 20, there is not a bad seat in the house. From the Little Mermaid with larger-than life Disney characters that mesmerized my children, to Lion King and Mary Poppins. Every year, we try to make it to at least one fo the productions or concerts. We drive from Salt Lake City to St. George and stay at Paradise Village on a weekend and enjoy ourselves. We even were able to receive 15% off show tickets when staying in one of the vacation homes at Paradise Village so we can afford to take all the kids and get better seats. We have made this a tradition in our family for the last 5 years and highly recommend it to other families whether you live in Utah or not. Come see a show here and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Tuacahn's History

"Tuacahn" comes from a Mayan word meaning "Canyon of the Gods." Built in the shadow of 1500-foot spectacular red rock cliffs, the Tuacahn Amphitheatre and Center for the Arts was created to awaken the nobility of the human soul and transmit light and hope to people everywhere through the arts and education.

The idea of this incredible outdoor amphitheater began with Doug Stewart in 1993. Stewart was a renowned playwright and a St Tuacahn aerial viewGeorge resident. From the beginning Tuacahn focused on both entertainment and performing, as well as theatrical education. Stewart is quoted as saying, “ The stunning beauty and perfect surroundings stopped me in my tracks. I was brought to tears when I first stood there, and after taking it in for some time - envisioning an amphitheater and a stage with an awesome backdrop of 1,500 foot red rock cliffs, and hearing the sounds of music echoing from the canyon walls, I flew back to town to see who the land belonged to.” Through his vision, the incredible theater was completed in 1995.

The musical Utah! was the first performance at the theater, and ran from 1995-1999. This show included live acting, real-life animals, pyrotechnics and even a recreation of a flash flood! In 1999 the theater decided they needed to expand their performances and include something new. This started what was called the “Summer Festival of Theater” and offered performances of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. In August of 1999 Tuacahn opened the Tuacahn High School, which is now the first public charter high school in the state. The school focuses on a college preparatory curriculum with an extra focus placed on drama, dance, computer technology and music.

Tuacahn's Creation of High School for the Performing Arts Charter School

The Tuacahn Center for the Arts works to preserve the American musical theater for the current generation and a new generation of theatergoers. Tuacahn High School for the Performing Arts opened in 1999 as Utah's first public charter high school. The school offers an intimate, rigorous college-prep curriculum that focuses on music, dance, drama, visual arts and technical theater; many students end up in the summer playbill. The school's 42,000 square foot facility includes classrooms, a library, a large dance studio, a black box theater, rectal hall and music studios.

Along with all the concerts happening in the Spring, Tuacahn features the show Thriller each October. This is a dance production done with an Halloween theme and includes spooky costumes, skeletons, zombies and incredible dancing!
